Winter adventures

Our properties sit at the center of Maine's winter playground. Here's what's on.

Snowmobiling — hundreds of miles of groomed trails. The ITS trail system runs right past our Greenville properties — you can ride from your door onto trails that go all the way to the Canadian border. Our cabins are built for sledders: heated gear storage, trailer parking, and hot water for thawing out. Peak season is January through March.

Ice fishing on Moosehead and Sebec. Drill a hole and drop a line for landlocked salmon, lake trout, brook trout, and cusk. Our lakefront homes put you steps from the ice. We can point you to local guides and bait shops in Greenville and Dover-Foxcroft.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Miles of quiet trails wind through the woods around every property. Strap on snowshoes and walk straight from your door into a silent white forest. The Lily Bay area and the Sebec Lake region both have groomed Nordic trails nearby.

Downhill skiing — Big Squaw is 30 minutes away. Big Squaw Mountain (now called Big Moose Mountain) offers downhill skiing and riding with Moosehead Lake views. It's a local hill with local prices — a great day trip from any of our properties.

Winter wildlife watching. Moose are easiest to spot in winter — look for them at dawn and dusk along the lake shores and in the woods. Bald eagles hunt the open water, and the animal tracks in fresh snow tell you who's been visiting.

Après-adventure: warm up in style

Hot tubs under the stars. Beaver Cove House and Lily Bay Chalet both have hot tubs. There's nothing like sinking into steaming water while snow falls around you and the Milky Way comes out. It's the single best apres-ski (or apres-sled) move in Maine.

Fireplaces and wood stoves. Every home has a fireplace or wood stove. Curl up with a book, play cards, or just watch the flames. The living room at Sebec Lake House with the fire going and the snow coming down outside? That's the postcard.

Saunas, game rooms, and chef's kitchens. The Chalet has a game room (pool, foosball, golf simulator, darts, arcade) for when the kids still have energy. Every kitchen is fully equipped for cooking big winter meals. Bring groceries from Greenville or Dover-Foxcroft and hunker down.

When is snowmobile season in Maine?

Peak snowmobile season is January through March, when the ITS trails are groomed and the lakes are frozen solid. December can be good if the snow comes early.
